Ricky Hatton has reluctantly confirmed that his exhibition bout with Marco Antonio Barrera will have to be put on hold. The Hitman had dropped over 40lb to prepare for his ring return in front of the Sky Sports cameras on July 2.
But an injury to Hughie Fury - who was on the same Manchester AO Arena bill - has prompted broadcast partner Sky Sports to postpone the whole event until Saturday, November 12.
Ricky, 43, who has been training for his bout with Marco Antonio Barrera for 15 weeks, said: "I wish Hughie a speedy recovery but I'm obviously gutted as I have been training so hard for this event. "But I'll take a little break and be back fitter and stronger for the new date with the fans. We've all waited a long time for this, so I hope the fans can be a little bit more patient so we can be back with a bigger and better show in November."
Tickets remain valid for the new date, however, if you cannot attend please seek a refund from your point of purchase.
The Hatton event was due to begin after the Fury vs Michael Hunter fight ended, and has an undercard that also included UFC legends Dan Hardy and Diego Sanchez.
Europa Combat's Mike Jones, who is promoting the Hatton portion of the bill, said: "Sky are our broadcast partner and Boxxer brought some incredible talent to the bill, so when they were forced to put the event on hold, with just two weeks to go, we had no option but to follow their lead and postpone as well.
“We remain committed to that relationship and look forward to joining forces again a bit later in the year.”
"Ricky has got himself into incredible shape - and will continue to be an inspiration to people who may be struggling with their mental health or need to kickstart some energy into their daily lives. We’re not going anywhere and we’ll be seeing fans a bit later this year for a truly spectacular night of entertainment.”
